Real recovery takes time

Long-term rehab in Geelong and Melbourne you can trust

If short-term care hasn’t worked, or you know you need more support, long-term rehab can give you the time and space to truly heal.

A resident sits at a plain wooden desk in a tidy room, tying the laces of their running shoes. Next to them, a glass of water and a folded towel are neatly placed. The morning light casts a long shadow across the floor, hinting at early, structured starts that repeat day after day in long-term rehab.

90 days + of structured care

24-hour support from clinical staff

Medical detox and stabilisation available

Treatment for co-occurring mental health

In a light-filled classroom-style space, several residents sit at separate desks or tables, each working quietly on a writing exercise. A facilitator moves between them, leaning slightly to check someone’s work. The emphasis is on the materials — notebooks, pens, printed handouts — with body language showing concentration and engagement.
It’s not just about getting clean

Real change takes time, and we can help you get there

Most people who come to us have already tried to quit. Maybe you’ve been through short-term rehab, detox, or other support, and you’re still stuck in the same cycle. That’s not a failure. It just means you need something more comprehensive, more stabilising, and more honest. That’s what long-term rehab is here to offer.

We’ve supported hundreds of people through 60- and 90-day care, including those with complex trauma, mental health issues, and repeated relapses. Our approach is steady, real, and personal, because real recovery isn’t something you rush. It’s something you grow into.

  • Long-term rehab gives you time to rebuild safely, without pressure
  • It’s designed for people who’ve tried shorter treatments but keep relapsing
  • We help you address the root causes, not just the substance use
What’s included in long-term care

What you can expect from your stay

Our long-term rehab program is built to hold you, not just treat you. It offers a full arc of care, from detox and stabilisation to counselling, life skills, and relapse prevention.

What’s included in long-term rehab

  • Medical detox and 24-hour clinical support if needed
  • Daily counselling, group therapy and psychoeducation
  • Trauma-informed and mental health-integrated care
  • Peer support in a structured therapeutic community
  • Exercise, mindfulness, nutrition, and creative therapies
  • Transition planning and access to aftercare programs
Addiction is widespread - and recovery takes time

Why long-term support is sometimes necessary

Recovery isn't always quick, especially when you've lived with addiction for years. According to the 2023 National Drug Use Survey, nearly half of Australians over 14 have used illicit drugs at some point. For many, the road back is long - and that’s why long-term care matters.

Why short-term rehab doesn’t always stick

Short programs can help interrupt a crisis or stabilise a dangerous moment, but they rarely offer enough time to process trauma, understand triggers, or rebuild healthy thought patterns. Habits formed over years can’t be undone in a few weeks, and most people need time to build new routines, rebuild self-trust, and reconnect with what matters to them. Long-term care provides that time and the right structure to use it well.

How long-term rehab supports deeper change

Who benefits most from long-term care

This level of support isn’t for everyone, but for some, it’s exactly what’s needed. People with complex trauma, dual diagnosis, or repeated relapses often benefit most. Long-term care is ideal if you’ve tried to recover before but couldn’t maintain progress, or if your drug or alcohol use has shaped your life for many years. When you’re ready to change but need more time, this is the safest place to start.

  • You’ve been through detox or short rehab before - but it didn’t last.
  • You’ve lived with addiction for years and need time to stabilise.
  • You’re ready to do the work - you just need the right space to do it.

What happens while you’re in treatment

This isn’t just a place to dry out. It’s a place to do deep, structured work. Each day is planned with purpose: group therapy, one-on-one counselling, psychoeducation, creative therapies, movement, rest. You’ll be supported by clinical staff, peers, and counsellors who understand addiction. You’ll also have time and space to reflect, regulate, and practice new ways of coping.

  • You’re guided every step of the way - but still in control.
  • Every day has structure, but also space to rest.
  • You’ll never be left alone to figure it out yourself.

What recovery looks like after 90 days

Long-term care lays the groundwork for your next chapter. By the time you leave, you’ll have worked through your immediate needs and built a stronger foundation for the future. You’ll be supported in re-entering life with a plan: aftercare, peer groups, ongoing therapy, and relapse prevention strategies that actually match your real world.

  • You’ll move forward with a relapse plan and aftercare support.
  • We’ll help you reconnect with life, not just avoid relapse.
  • You’ll leave with more confidence than you arrived with.

Our programs go beyond a one-size-fits-all model

We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Our programs are designed to meet and grow with you where you are. Whether you need hospital detox to get medically stable, a safe space in transitional housing to bridge the gap after inpatient care, or an intervention to help a loved one take the first step, we’ve built a path that supports every stage of the journey. Real recovery isn’t just about one decision. It’s about staying supported through all the hard ones that follow.

Common questions answered

Frequently asked questions about long-term rehab at The Hader Clinic

Can I stay longer than 90 days if I’m not ready to leave?

Yes. We’ve seen many people need extra time, and we’ll work with you to make that possible. If you’re not ready to leave after 90 days, we won’t push you out the door. We’ll reassess together and adjust your care to reflect what’s happening for you, not just what’s on paper.

In some cases, that means continuing with long-term residential rehab. In others, it might look like stepping down into something like transitional housing or an outpatient rehab program while still receiving structured support. We’ll talk it through.

This isn’t a conveyor belt. Some people stay longer because they need to stabilise, or because they’re not quite ready to face the next chapter. That’s not a failure, it’s just part of the process. We’ll walk with you until you’re ready, not until the clock runs out.

What if I relapse during long-term rehab? Will I be discharged?

Relapse happens, and it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. If it happens during treatment, we don’t discharge you for it. We’ll sit down with you, assess what’s going on, and support you through it. The goal is safety, honesty, and progress, not punishment.

Sometimes that means returning to detox briefly. Sometimes it means staying right where you are and doing some deeper work. We approach relapse like any other clinical event: seriously, compassionately, and without judgment.

Because we know it’s common, we integrate relapse prevention into everything we do here. That includes individual support, group work, and access to our dedicated relapse prevention service, which many people engage with both during and after residential care.

Most importantly, we understand how hard this is, and we’ll keep showing up for you, even when you stumble. That’s what long-term support means.

Do I have to start with detox before joining the long-term program?

Not everyone needs detox first. But if you're physically dependent on alcohol or other drugs, it's usually the safest first step. We'll assess your needs before admission and talk through the best plan together.

Many clients begin their recovery in our alcohol detox or drug detox programs, where they can stabilise under medical supervision. Once it's safe, they continue directly into long-term residential care.

Our goal is to set you up for success. That means making sure your body is ready for the psychological and emotional work of recovery.

Is it possible to see family or talk to my kids during my stay?

Yes. Staying connected to loved ones can be a powerful part of healing. We encourage healthy family contact during your stay, with guidance to ensure it supports your recovery. You’ll have scheduled opportunities for calls and visits, and we’ll help you navigate boundaries if relationships are complex.

We also offer a family support program to help your loved ones understand addiction, set their own boundaries, and walk alongside you in a healthier way.

Can I work or study while I’m in long-term rehab?

In most cases, no — and that’s intentional. Long-term rehab is a chance to step away from outside pressures and focus fully on recovery. We want you to use this time to reflect, rebuild, and stabilise without juggling work or study commitments.

That said, we know purpose matters. As you progress, you’ll be supported to develop new goals and explore structured activities that prepare you for life after treatment. That might include vocational guidance, life skills training, or education planning as part of your aftercare.

Do you offer support for legal, housing, or Centrelink issues?

Yes. Many of the people we work with are also navigating practical challenges like unstable housing, legal stress, or Centrelink difficulties. We’ll help you get the right supports in place while you’re here, and we can coordinate with external services if needed.

Our team can assist with forms, documentation, and referrals, and we’ll make sure your recovery plan includes space to address those real-world pressures. We can also help you explore financial assistance options if funding your treatment feels overwhelming.
