Depression and addiction are deeply connected

A targeted approach for a complex relationship

When you’re dealing with both depression and addiction, it can feel like you’re stuck in a loop, using substances to cope, then feeling worse because of them. We see this daily and understand how exhausting that cycle can be.

The meta-analysis of depression and substance use among individuals with alcohol use disorders confirms what many of us have lived: depression and substance use often go hand in hand. That’s why we treat both together, helping you stabilise, understand what’s happening beneath the surface, and take your first real step toward recovery.

  • Begin with medical detox in our Geelong hospital, where symptoms of withdrawal and depression are managed safely together
  • In Essendon, our residential program supports emotional healing with daily therapy, routine, and space to reconnect with yourself
  • Our 90-day program gives you time to rebuild structure, manage low mood, and recover without relying on substances to cope

We’ll call it when it suits you, with no pressure to commit

Frequently asked questions

What if I feel like I don't deserve help?

Feeling undeserving is one of the most painful parts of depression, but it’s also one of the most common. You're not broken, and you’re not alone. Depression distorts how we see ourselves and the world. Treatment helps you untangle that distortion and begin your recovery journey.

Many people come to our depression rehab centre feeling unworthy, ashamed or hopeless. That doesn’t make you a bad candidate for care — it makes you a perfect one. Our rehab for young adults, LGBTQ+ clients, and other diverse groups all start from different places — but they all start.

How do you treat depression when it doesn’t have a clear cause?

Not all depression has a clear trigger. Sometimes it builds over time. Sometimes it just arrives — and that’s still valid. We take an integrated and holistic approach that looks at your symptoms, your mental health condition, and any underlying causes you want to explore.

Our treatment for depression includes evidence-based therapy, group sessions, physical activities, and dual diagnosis support if addiction is involved. We help you understand your mental health, and then build a recovery plan from there.

Depression often overlaps with other mental health issues and substance use. Our article on substance abuse and comorbidity explains why treating both together is so important for lasting recovery.

Can depression really go away, or is it just about managing it?

Many people do recover fully from depression, but for others, it’s something they learn to manage. Either way, depression treatment can help you feel more stable, safe, and capable of living the life you want.

We don’t promise a quick fix. We offer a safe place to stabilise, understand your triggers, and build the insight and skills needed to move forward. Whether that means overcoming depression completely or learning how to live with it, we’ll support your goals.

Is it normal to feel nothing at all with depression?

Yes. Numbness — emotional flatness, disconnection, a lack of joy or sadness — is one of the most common symptoms of depression. For many people, it’s more distressing than sadness itself.

That feeling doesn’t mean you’re beyond help. It just means your brain and body are overwhelmed. Our programs use physical and creative therapies, talk therapy, and structured support to help you reconnect and rebuild your emotional range.

What happens if I can’t get out of bed during rehab?

We understand how hard it can be to take action when you’re depressed. Our staff will meet you where you are. We’ll help you take small steps, gently, not through force, but through understanding and support.

This is why inpatient rehab works. You’re not doing it alone. Whether it’s the first day or the tenth, we’ll help you find your feet. Structured support, alcohol rehab, and group therapy give you something to hold onto while your mind catches up.

If you’re wondering what daily life in rehab actually looks like, our blog on what happens in rehab gives you a detailed breakdown of the structure, therapies, and support available to help you take small steps forward.

Can I attend rehab if I’m taking antidepressants?

Yes — and we’ll work with you to make sure your medication is supported, reviewed and monitored during your stay. Our team includes psychiatrists and nurses who are experienced in managing medication as part of a broader treatment and support plan.

If you’re unsure whether your current medication is working, we’ll assess, check interactions, and offer options. Medication is just one part of our wide range of treatment, and we’ll build the rest of your plan around what’s working and what needs to change.

Is it normal to feel worse before things get better?

Yes. When you stop numbing your feelings or begin talking about painful experiences, things often feel harder before they start to feel easier. That’s not a sign of failure — it’s a sign of healing.

Our integrated approach balances therapy, routine, nutrition and a holistic approach to mental health. We’ll support you through the tough days and celebrate the wins, no matter how small. This is a safe place to feel what you need to feel.

How do you help when someone doesn’t want to be helped?

It’s incredibly hard to see someone you love withdraw or resist care. We offer family support and education to help you understand their mental health condition and avoid patterns of conflict or pressure.

Sometimes, resistance is fear. Sometimes it’s shame. Our team will help you plan a next step — whether that’s a conversation, an intervention, or just giving them time. You can also explore rehab for veterans, teens, or PTSD support if there are specific needs involved.

If you’re trying to support a loved one who’s resistant to care, you might find it helpful to read our guide on how to convince an addict to go to rehab. It offers practical advice on starting the conversation and helping someone take the first step toward treatment.
