Understanding the need for short-term care

Why short-term rehabilitation matters

According to the latest drug use statistics, nearly half of Australians aged 14+ have used illicit drugs, highlighting the urgent need for flexible, temporary treatment options that meet people where they are.

When short-term rehab is the right fit

Short-term rehab helps when you’re at a turning point (overwhelmed, unsafe, or needing a reset) but not ready or able to commit to long-term care. It’s a structured break from drug or alcohol use, with enough time to clear your head and stabilise your body. You’ll leave with clarity, a plan, and the tools to take your next steps toward recovery, whatever that looks like for you.

What short-term rehab can address

Short-term rehab can be a circuit breaker during an escalating pattern, relapse, or sudden crisis. It provides immediate support for people who feel unsafe, overwhelmed, or unable to manage drug or alcohol use on their own. It also offers structure, stabilisation, and clarity, which can be critical before making longer-term decisions about recovery.

  • Supports detox and physical stabilisation in a safe setting.
  • Gives time and space to understand your behaviour and triggers.
  • Helps reduce risk of harm to yourself or those around you.

How the structure helps recovery

A predictable daily rhythm can be profoundly healing. Meals at set times, group therapy every afternoon, evening reflection: It’s the opposite of the chaos many of us are used to. That consistency builds safety and restores nervous system balance. You’re not just surviving each day. You’re learning how to live again, and that starts with structure.

  • Structure reduces chaos and anxiety in early recovery.
  • Daily therapy opens space for insight and honesty.
  • Living in community reduces shame and isolation.

Limitations and when more time is needed

Short-term care doesn’t solve everything. It’s not designed for deep therapeutic work, long-term behaviour change, or managing high-risk relapse factors on its own. For some people (especially those with severe addiction or co-occurring mental health conditions), a longer-term rehab may offer the consistency and depth of care needed to make sustainable change.

  • Severe addiction may require longer-term rehabilitation.
  • Complex mental health issues may need extended support.
  • Some behaviours take time to change safely and sustainably.

Where short-term fits in the recovery journey

Short-term rehab isn’t a shortcut. It’s a step. For some, it’s a chance to stop the damage and get support quickly. For others, it’s the start of a bigger commitment to themselves. Either way, it helps lay the foundation for recovery: insight, stability, and a clear-headed plan. From there, we can help guide you into whatever comes next.

  • Use short-term rehab to get stable and make a plan.
  • Connect directly to outpatient or longer-term options.
  • Choose what recovery looks like, one decision at a time.

FAQs about short-term addiction rehab at The Hader Clinic

How much does the 28-day short-term rehab program cost?

Our standard 28-day short-term rehab program costs $18,900, which includes your hospital-based detox (up to 7 days) and your full inpatient residential stay. This fee covers all therapeutic groups, one-on-one counselling, medical reviews, and nutritious meals prepared onsite. You’ll have a private room, 24/7 clinical supervision, and access to discharge planning and aftercare referrals. This is a single up-front payment, and rebates may be available if you have eligible private health insurance.

What is the daily schedule like in the 28-day program?

Every day in short-term rehab is carefully structured to support your recovery. Mornings begin with meditation and peer check-ins, followed by education groups, counselling sessions, and 12-step meetings. Afternoons include life-skills workshops, relapse prevention planning, and physical activities like group walks or onsite yoga. Evenings wind down with structured reflection and shared meals. Your week will also include:

  • You’ll have one-on-one counselling and regular clinical reviews to check on your progress and mental wellbeing.
  • Our team runs psychoeducation workshops and interactive recovery groups that help you understand your addiction and develop practical strategies.
  • Family therapy sessions can be arranged for you and your loved ones if appropriate, either in person or via phone or video.

What happens after short-term rehab ends?

Recovery doesn’t stop after 28 days and neither does our support. Before discharge, you’ll receive a tailored care plan that may include referrals to outpatient rehab, transitional housing, or individual counselling. Many clients also join our Hader at Home digital aftercare program or family support services. Our goal is to make sure you’re not just leaving, but stepping forward with purpose.

Will I detox during short-term rehab?

Yes, our 28-day program begins with a supervised hospital detox at our Geelong facility. You’ll receive medical oversight, symptom monitoring, and stabilisation support in a safe, private setting. Once your body has cleared the substance, you’ll move to our Essendon location to continue your inpatient therapeutic care. If you’ve already completed detox elsewhere, we can admit you directly to residential care following an assessment.

What addictions does short-term rehab treat?

Our short-term program provides support for a wide range of substance dependencies. Our clinical team will assess your needs and determine whether this setting is appropriate. We regularly support clients with addictions to:

  • We support people seeking alcohol rehab through structured detox, education, and relapse prevention in a safe setting.
  • We offer heroin rehab that includes both medical detox and psychological support to break the cycle of opioid dependence.
  • Our prescription drug rehab pathway helps you stabilise and recover from dependency on medications such as opioids, benzos, and stimulants.
  • Marijuana rehab supports people dealing with chronic use, withdrawal symptoms, and low motivation during early recovery.
  • Crack rehab provides safe withdrawal management, therapeutic support, and relapse prevention for stimulant addiction.
  • Our team offers non-judgemental care for people seeking magic mushrooms rehab, especially when use has triggered mental health issues.
  • If you’re seeking smoking rehab as part of your broader substance recovery, we can support nicotine cessation while in treatment.

Are mental health issues addressed during short-term rehab?

Yes, mental health is a key part of your recovery journey. While short-term rehab is not a standalone mental health treatment program, we provide dual diagnosis care for people managing both substance use and mental health challenges. Our therapeutic team supports:

  • We help clients work through anger management concerns by addressing the triggers and emotional regulation difficulties tied to substance use.
  • We offer therapeutic support for anxiety, including techniques to manage panic attacks, social anxiety, and generalised worry.
  • If you’re dealing with depression, we support mood regulation, self-worth, and structure, all of which are vital to recovery.
  • We work with clients with personality disorders by helping them build stable relationships, emotional control, and self-awareness.
  • PTSD is treated using trauma-informed approaches that focus on safety, trust, and reducing the impact of traumatic memories.
