  • Drug detox can be physically and emotionally intense, which is why medical oversight is crucial from day one.
  • We support you through withdrawal in a safe space with evidence-based care and real human connection.

What to expect when you stop using

Understanding drug detox and withdrawal

Across Australia, thousands of people seek treatment every year for substance use, most commonly for alcohol, amphetamines, cannabis and heroin. These are not just statistics. They’re people who’ve made the decision to step away from dependence and take control. If you’re reading this, you might be at that same turning point. Drug detox is where that process begins — and you don’t have to face it alone.

Why supervised drug detox is essential

Stopping drugs suddenly without support can cause serious health risks, especially if your body is dependent. You may already know this from past attempts. In detox, the goal isn’t to punish or push you through it. It’s to stabilise your system, reduce physical danger, and make the experience as manageable and dignified as possible. We’ll be by your side the whole time.

What withdrawal can feel like

Withdrawal is different for everyone, but there are patterns. Symptoms might start with restlessness, shaking, or intense cravings. You might feel emotional without knowing why, or numb and shut down.

  • Common symptoms include sweating, tremors, insomnia, or nausea.
  • Emotionally, people often feel flat, irritable, anxious or raw.
  • You may feel overwhelmed by cravings even if you're committed to quitting.

The impact of drug use on your body and brain

If you’ve been using regularly, your body’s balance has likely shifted. Stimulants, opioids, cannabis, and other substances each impact different systems, but the underlying result is often the same: you don’t feel like yourself anymore.

  • Your sleep, digestion, memory or moods may be deeply disrupted.
  • Some people experience paranoia, confusion or persistent low mood.
  • You might feel physically wrecked or mentally disconnected, or both.

How we help during detox

We don’t expect you to be okay when you walk in. That’s our job. From day one, we monitor your withdrawal symptoms, adjust your medications, and create a calm, low-stimulation space to let your body begin healing.

  • You’ll be in a private, supportive environment with trained clinical staff.
  • Meals, routines and care are provided. You don’t have to manage anything alone.
  • We respect where you’ve been and help you get through the hardest part.

Detox is the beginning, not the end

People often ask if detox alone is enough. It’s a vital first step, but without follow-up support, relapse is likely. After detox, we offer pathways into longer treatment options based on your goals and needs.

  • Many clients stay for counselling, relapse prevention or residential rehab.
  • We’ll help you create a care plan that supports real, long-term change.
  • The goal isn’t just getting clean. It’s rebuilding confidence, structure and connection.

Frequently asked questions

Answers you're looking for and insights you need

Can you help if I’m using more than one drug at once?

Yes. Many people arrive using more than one substance, like heroin, ice, cannabis, alcohol or prescription medications. We understand how overwhelming that can be. Our experienced team can support you through complex drug and alcohol detox safely. We’ll assess your use, build a treatment plan around your needs, and help you stabilise with medical oversight. If needed, we may refer you to our specific ice rehab or heroin rehab program after detox, or help you plan next steps closer to home.

Do I need a referral to start drug detox with you?

No referral is needed. You can contact us directly. We’ll discuss your situation, share clear information, and support you through the intake process. You don’t need to go through your GP or a service, though we’re happy to work with them if it helps you feel more supported. We understand that reaching out can feel like a big step. We’re here to assist you with care and without judgement.

What if I’m on medication or have a medical condition?

It’s very common, and we can accommodate that. Our clinical staff regularly support clients with co-occurring medical issues, such as chronic pain, mental health conditions, or diabetes. We’ll review your medication, speak with your existing providers if needed, and ensure your drug detox is safe and supportive. The program is overseen by a medical team who monitor your health every day, keeping you comfortable and focused on recovery.

How quickly can I be admitted for drug detox?

We try to admit people as quickly as we can, often within days. If you’re in urgent need, our emergency rehab team may be able to help. We’ll discuss your symptoms, review any risks, and explain what’s available. Our goal is to get you the care you need without delay. We prioritise safety and ensure that your first few days are medically supervised, stabilised, and as comfortable as possible.

Can I bring my phone or contact my family during detox?

You’ll be able to contact family once you’ve stabilised. In the first stage of detox, we limit phone use to help you rest and focus. This creates a more comfortable, low-stress environment and allows our team to monitor your health closely. Once you’re ready, family communication can be arranged, and we’ll support you in reconnecting with loved ones in ways that feel safe and helpful.

Can I access support after detox if I’m not ready for rehab?

Yes. We know not everyone is ready for rehab straight away. After detox, we can offer outpatient counselling, relapse prevention support, or check-ins with a community-based AOD counsellor in your local area. Whether you’re coming from regional Victoria or Melbourne’s outer suburbs, we’ll help you transition back into your community with ongoing support. We’re here to assist you in finding the best next step, even if that looks different for everyone.

Do you help with court-ordered or legal detox requirements?

We do. Our drug detox service supports clients navigating court orders, parole conditions, or legal proceedings. We provide documentation, progress updates, and referrals to our inpatient alcohol rehab programs where needed. If you’ve been asked to attend detox as part of a legal requirement, we’ll work with you and your legal team to ensure your care is clinically sound and appropriately reported.

How do I prepare for detox if I’m still using every day?

You don’t need to stop before you arrive. Trying to safely detox from substances like ice can be dangerous without professional help. We encourage you to reach out and discuss your situation. We’ll help you plan the safest way to start. You’ll receive clear guidance on what to bring, what your first day will involve, and what you can expect. Our aim is to ease the fear and get you safely into care so you can start making changes with confidence.
