Why therapy helps adults regain function

Why rehab works when it’s matched to your needs

Effective rehabilitation requires therapy intensity proportional to your circumstances and safety risks. We combine withdrawal management and counselling for alcohol and drug treatment. This means treatment will be tailored to your level of risk, rather than a one-size-fits-all program.

Key benefits for adults

  • Structure and distance from triggers to reduce relapse risk during early recovery
  • Clinical monitoring during cleansing and early intervention for safer stabilisation
  • Integrated support for substance use and mental health
  • Time to build practical relapse prevention skills you can use at home and work

Guidance for adults seeking rehab

Practical questions about rehab and recovery

When should an adult consider entering rehab for substance use?

An adult should consider rehab when alcohol or drug use is becoming difficult to control or is affecting their physical health, mental wellbeing, relationships, work or everyday responsibilities. You do not need to wait until substance use causes a major crisis before seeking support.

Other signs that an assessment may be helpful include experiencing withdrawal symptoms, using more than intended, repeatedly trying to stop without success or returning to substance use after counselling or other treatment.

What happens if I am at risk of alcohol or drug withdrawal?

If withdrawal is likely, your risks should be assessed before you suddenly stop using alcohol or drugs. Withdrawal symptoms vary depending on the substance, level of dependence, physical health and previous withdrawal experiences.

An assessment of whether hospital detox is required before starting an adult rehab program. Where appropriate, you can transition from detox into residential treatment without an unnecessary break in care.

Detox manages the immediate physical effects of stopping substance use, but it does not address the behaviours, triggers or mental health concerns connected to addiction. Continuing into rehabilitation can help you develop the skills and recovery plan needed to support longer-term change.

How do I choose between residential, outpatient and at-home adult rehab?

Residential rehab may be appropriate when you need intensive structure, separation from triggers or round-the-clock support. Outpatient rehab may suit adults who are medically stable, have reliable support and can attend regular treatment while living at home. At-home treatment may offer additional flexibility for people managing work, parenting or caring responsibilities.

Residential and community-based treatment are both recognised rehabilitation settings, and the most appropriate option varies from individual to individual.

The Hader Clinic assesses your circumstances before recommending a pathway. Available options include hospital detox, residential rehab, and the intensive outpatient program. Your treatment may also change over time, allowing you to begin with intensive support and gradually move into a less structured program as your recovery becomes more stable.

Is adult rehab like a boot camp?

No. Professional drug and alcohol rehabilitation should not use punishment, humiliation or harsh discipline to force change.

Adult rehab does provide structure. A typical program may include scheduled therapy, group sessions, recovery education, wellbeing activities and time for reflection. The purpose of this routine is to create stability and help you practise healthier behaviours away from everyday triggers.

Treatment should also recognise that adults enter rehab with different experiences, responsibilities, health needs and reasons for using substances. Care should therefore be personalised rather than based on a one-size-fits-all disciplinary approach.

Can adult rehab treat addiction and mental health conditions together?

Yes. Adult rehab can address substance dependence alongside co-occurring mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety or trauma-related symptoms. This is often referred to as dual-diagnosis treatment.

Substance use and mental health can affect each other, so treating only one concern may leave important triggers or symptoms unaddressed. During assessment, tell the clinical team about any diagnoses, prescribed medications, treating practitioners, psychiatric admissions or recent changes in your mental health.

What ongoing support helps adults maintain recovery after rehab?

Ongoing support helps you apply what you learned in rehab while returning to work, relationships, parenting and other everyday responsibilities. Your aftercare plan should reflect your personal triggers, mental health, living environment and risk of relapse.

Support may include individual counselling, outpatient treatment, peer recovery groups, medical care and relapse-prevention planning. Family support can also help improve communication and establish healthier boundaries at home.

Some adults benefit from Transitional Housing when returning directly to their previous environment would make early recovery more difficult. Others may move into the Hader at Home program as they gradually become more independent.

Aftercare should also identify early warning signs and explain what to do if cravings increase or a lapse occurs. Seeking help early can prevent a temporary difficulty from becoming a more serious return to substance use. The goal is to provide enough continuing structure to support recovery while helping you rebuild a stable and sustainable adult life.
